Controlling iTunes and QuickTime with your iPhone earbuds
After some Googling, I realized that this is not entirely new. It seems to have came out about a year ago but since it requires the right combination of hardware, I just discovered it. With Leopard and all new Macs that were released starting with the unibody laptops, the headphone jack now recognizes the three connectors on the iPhone earbuds. What this means is that it is now possible to con

Syncing Address Book with Google Contacts
This is actually a new feature in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, but it was so unadvertised that I just discovered it this weekend. It is pretty amazing after discovering how to sync Calenders to Google Calendars, and now with this tip to sync Address Book Contacts with Google Contacts, there is really no need for Mobile Me anymore. To set this up:
1. Open Address Book.
2. Click on "Address Bo Read More

3rd Party Mac Apps
There are some zip files and some archives that just can't seem to be open by Mac OS X archive utilities. I recently found a free application that seem to open them all without any problem even when OS X won't open them : Zipeg (http://www.zipeg.com). It will also open password protected archives (if you know the password) and multi-parts archive. I am very impressed by this free little applicati

iPhone Tips
There has been a lot of talk about iPhone viruses for jailbroken iPhones lately, so here is how to secure your iPhone. The latest viruses aren't actually exploiting a vulnerability in the iPhone's firmware, it is just using SSH that has been left open combined with the default password "alpine" which Apple uses on all iPhones. The main reason why non-jailbroken iPhones aren't vulnerable is that

"dvMatte Pro" effect not rendering properly (or at all) in Final Cut Pro?
Well, a very specific tip today, but one that took forever for me to figure out. The "dvMatte Pro" effect in FCP worked for most people, but then I also received tons of emails about it not working as well. The answer is simple, if FCP doesn't want to render that effect or simply if the render is not clean, you have to change the Sequence Settings. Hit "Command - 0" in FCP to bring up the Sequenc

Finder
I was looking for a way to change the icon of an application the other day, and I couldn't believe how the solution was simple. First, I had to find the icon I really wanted. Once I found a file that had an appropriate icon, I did a Command-I (to get info). I clicked on the icon of the file and pressed Command-C (for copy). Then I went the file that needed the icon to be changed. I did a Command-

Keeping your Aperture library organized
I'm definitely not the expert at keeping everything organized, but simply creating new "Projects" in Aperture every time I import photos is unsustainable. Projects just kept getting stacked up and I couldn't find the photos I was looking for anymore. I finally found a solution that is working a lot better. What I did is to create folders for each year and I also added the month number before the

Trimming in QuickTime X!
QuickTime X was really stripped down compared to all the features that were in QuickTime 7. One feature that stayed is "Trim". The shortcut "Command - T" will bring up the trimming feature. It fits exactly with the "iMovie" look that is being adopted throughout iLife and the OS.
